Cerberus is the keeper of hell. It is not a wild monster in the woods - Hedes, the God of the underworld, keeps it. Cerberus stays right in front of the gate of Hell, keeping the ones that are alive from entering Hell, and restricting the dead spirits from running away from Hell. Cerberus is known to have a shape of a dog with 3 heads. What is confusing, though, is that in the Disney movie, it was awfully huge when its size was pretty moderate in the ancient paintings and illustrations. But, to be honest, I wish it was gigantic, because than it would look stronger and mightier. Couple of heroes went past Cerberus and entered Hell alive, by giving it a bread so that it can't bark, choking one of its head and bringing it to the above ground, and taking away its heart with a beautiful music.
